Mangrove Restoration process

The Mangrove Restoration Mission (MRM) is a dedicated effort to protect Tanzania’s “blue forests.” These unique ecosystems live at the intersection of land and sea, serving as the first line of defense for our coastal communities and the most efficient carbon sinks on the planet.

As part of the Forest Focus ecosystem, the MRM project restores the degraded tidal forests of Pangani, ensuring that these vital guardians of the coast continue to thrive for generations to come.

The Mission

Our strategy combines ecological science with local coastal knowledge:

  • Coastal Defense: Mangroves act as natural buffers, protecting villages from storm surges, tidal waves, and the increasing threat of coastal erosion.
  • Marine Nursery Support: By restoring these forests, we are rebuilding the habitats for 75% of the fish and crustacean species that local fishing families rely on for food and income.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Mangroves store up to four times more carbon than tropical rainforests, making this project a cornerstone of our climate action strategy.

Progress & Goals

We are scaling our efforts to meet the urgent needs of our changing coastline.

Location

Tanga, Tanzania
Coastal Fishermen & Women Groups
Target: 20,000,000 Mangroves

Beneficiaries

Already Planted: 5,000,000 Mangroves

  • Their families struggled to afford school fees
  • Children miss classes due to lack of supplies

The “Blue Economy” Approach

We ensure the Mangrove Restoration Mission provides immediate benefits to the people:

  • Mangrove Beekeeping: Supporting communities to produce high-quality honey in the forest canopy.
  • Sustainable Mariculture: Balancing crab and shrimp harvesting with forest preservation.
  • Climate Resilience: Training local groups in disaster risk reduction through healthy mangrove barriers.
